Marathon Fishing
Marathon has some amazing fishing deep offshore, on the reefs and wrecks, on the flats and open waters of the Gulf, and on the inshore shallows. Marathon is also well known for its amazing tarpon fishing at the Seven Mile Bridge and Bahia Honda Bridge. The fishing in Marathon, like the rest of the Florida Keys, is world-class. There are a great number of charter boats available for every fishing style whether you prefer backcountry fishing, reef fishing, or fishing the deep offshore waters for pelagic fish. A fishing guide will be able to use his knowledge of the local fishing trends to get you on the fish and have a fun and rewarding fishing experience.
Inshore Fishing in Marathon Key
When you talk about inshore fishing in Marathon, it can mean many things. The shallow sandy waters near shore provide excellent light-tackle fishing for bonefish, permit, snook, tarpon, redfish and more. The crystal clear waters of the shallows and flats are perfect for this kind of sight fishing, and the action can be fast and furious. The backcountry channels and flats, and the Everglades National Park boast incredible scenery and excellent fishing for redfish, snapper, mackerel, trout, and even tarpon.
Along the bridges in Marathon is perhaps the biggest draw-tarpon. The fishing for tarpon in Marathon is world-class and there is no bigger thrill than battling one of these hard running, leaping silver giants.
The north side of Marathon, on the Gulf of Mexico, has deeper water than the other Florida Keys islands and the many natural ledges, artificial reefs and wrecks provide superb fishing opportunities for snapper, cobia, mackerel, grouper, and barracuda. The calm waters and great action make this a perfect family fishing adventure.
Marathon Offshore Fishing
Marathon, like all the Florida Keys, has excellent offshore fishing in the Gulf Stream for pelagic species such as marlin, sailfish, tuna, dolphin fish (mahi-mahi), wahoo, and kingfish. Just minutes from the docks, the offshore fishing is hot in Marathon and it doesn't take long to get there. Marathon also has an offshore structure that makes it unique to the Florida Keys: the Marathon West Hump. The Hump is a rock formation that rises up from the deep to a depth of just 480 feet. The Gulfstream current pushes against this formation creating an upwelling of nutrient rich water that attracts huge numbers of fish. Amberjack, black fin tuna, and mako shark are constant residents feeding on the schools of baitfish that congregate around the Marathon West Hump. Marlin, sailfish, yellow fin tuna, dolphin fish (mahi-mahi), and sharks are also common catches. The action at the Hump is always hot, so don't miss an opportunity to fish one of Marathon's best fishing spots.
Whatever kind of fishing you prefer-backcountry, flats, reefs and wrecks, tarpon, or deep water offshore-Marathon has the fishing adventure you are looking for. With year-round great weather and even better fishing, a Marathon fishing vacation is a must for every angler.
